Seminar on “Innovative Belgian Technologies for the Heavy Industry – Cement, Steel & Railways”
In the framework of the State Visit of Their Majesties, the King and the Queen of the Belgians, the Wallonia Trade & Investment Agency at the Embassy of Belgium in New Delhi organised a seminar on “Innovative Belgian Technologies for the Heavy Industry – Cement, Steel & Railways” at the Jahangir Hall, Hotel Taj Diplomatic Enclave (previously Hotel Taj Palace), New Delhi, on Wednesday, 08 November 2017 at 02:00 pm. The event was organised in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) & Brussels Invest & Export (BIE).
His Majesty the King of the Belgians graced the inaugural session with his presence. Also present were H.E. Jan Luykx, the Belgian Ambassador to India, H.E. Mrs. Gayatri Issar Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Willy Borsus, Minister President of Wallonia, Secretary De Crem, Federal Govt. of Belgium, Secretary Ramesh Abhishek, DIPP, Govt. of India among other dignitaries. Over a hundred corporate executives, both from Belgium and India, belonging to the Cement, Steel and Railways sectors attended the event. The event was very successful with interactive participation between the audience and presenters during the Q&A session.
The seminar was followed by high tea in the lawns of the hotel giving the participants another opportunity to meet each other and seek opportunities for future business.
Heavy Industry in Belgium
Based on decades of manufacturing in the heavy industry, Belgium has acquired a vast knowledge and expertise in the fields of Cement, Steel, & Railways. A large number of Belgian companies are supplying niche products and innovative technologies to these sectors. These advanced technologies are being used by industries to optimise their production, reduce their environmental footprint, improve their maintenance, increase their energy efficiency, recycle more, and reduce downtime, among other things.
The inaugural session, followed by the two sub-sessions presented Belgian knowledge and expertise in advanced technologies in the Cement, Steel & Railway sectors and helped in creating awareness among the Indian industry about Belgian innovations in these areas.
These areas were expertly dealt with by the industry experts from Belgium present at the event.
The Inaugural Session
H.E. Willy Borsus, Minister President of Wallonia delivered the inaugural address. He spoke about Belgium and its long history of innovation, research, efficiency in the fields of steel, cement and railways. He gave examples of Belgian innovations including zinc coated steel used in automotive industry, recycling and valorisation of cement waste, freezing of underground sand for digging tunnel without interference at ground level among a host of others.
Mr. Ramesh Abhishek gave a broad picture of the Indian economy and sectors as well as the host of opportunities available to foreign companies who wish to enter India. He also expounded on many schemes that have been initiated by the Government of India in the skill, infrastructure, digitalisation sectors among others and on behalf of the Government of India, extended full support to the Belgian companies wishing to do business with India.
Session 1 on Cement and Steel had presentations from three Belgian companies. Mr. Sébastien Dossogne, CEO of Magotteaux, Mr. M. Vallinayagam, Director & CEO, Hamon Research Cottrell India, Mr. Devendra Deshmukh, MD & Country Head, Gantrex India Crane Rails gave an overview of their operations in India and presented innovations in the steel and cement sectors as developed and practiced by them.
Session 2 on Railways also had presentations from three Belgian companies. Mr. Lieven Danneels, CEO, Televic Group, Mr. Thierry Schmidt, President of the Board of Directors, ESCO and Mr. Johan Potargent, CEO, AMS Belgium presented their technologies used by the railways sector in Belgium and abroad and their potential implications in India.
An animated Q&A session followed the presentations.
Concluding address was delivered by Mrs. Isabelle Pollet, Director Asia-Pacific of the Wallonia Export-Investment Agency (AWEX) followed by a vote of thanks by Mr. Rajiv Dhawan, President Belgium Luxembourg Business Association (BLBA).
